Setting
The Evoker takes place in a world where magic is an energy that exists within all living beings. Many species have evolved to manipulate the magic within themselves to perform various things such as flying or breathing fire. Humans are a species that lack this ability, with few exceptions, who are called Magicians. Fortunately, humans have developed a way of using it through the use of special objects called artifacts, which are embedded with magical power.
The story of the game takes place within the nation of Mira, which is almost entirely located on an island. Mira is made up of 58 castles, each controlling a fief, with the exception of Castle Mira, which controls the whole nation. As the story progresses, the hero may visit some of these fiefs on their quest to find the Evoker.

Plot
The story begins with the protagonist, an orphan from a village in southern Mira. Their name, gender, and appearance are up to the player. Before they died, their parents told them many mystical tales of a legendary artifact called the Evoker. The Evoker is a beautiful gemstone that when worn by a hero of pure heart, they can be raised to their fullest potential.
After finding out that they may have the spark of being a Magician, they quickly depart on a quest to find the Evoker, without telling anyone in the village. Along their quest, they visit many of the fiefs in Mira. They help its citizens, gaining experience and power along the way.
During the final stages of the game, the protagonist eventually finds the Evoker in Castle Mira, where it is revealed that the Evoker is not a gemstone, but actually a long line of powerful Magicians each pass down an ancient spell to their successor. When greeted with someone who has identified them as the Evoker, the Evoker challenges them to a duel to see if they are worthy. The protagonist wins this duel, and so the Evoker bestows them with the spell’s effect.
It turns out that the Evoker does not bring out the potential in others, but rather lets them see the memories of their past life. Large amounts of memory from this past life would rapidly be transmitted into the target’s mind. This intense data dump causes most living beings’ minds to simply shatter, but due to the revolutionary information that would be gained were they to find someone strong enough to handle the effects, the Evokers kept the spell alive for centuries until a suitable Magician—the protagonist—appeared.
This is where the story takes a major shift in tone. Fortunately, the protagonist was strong enough to handle the spell’s effects. Unfortunately, he realizes that in their past life, they were a serial killer known as "Lio". The remainder of the story follows the protagonist as they start to find themselves to change. They become more cold and merciless. They start to feel an eerie sense of joy whenever they slay monsters. They become less inclined to help others.
At the climax, the protagonist goes to sleep and finds themselves in a fight with Lio, a symbolic representation of the fight for control. The result of the fight is left ambiguous and is up to the player to wonder whether the protagonist was able to let go and sever his past life’s memories from their own, or if they tragically succumbed control to Lio.
Characters
The Hero: Born in Praeter Village, the protagonist is less of an actual character and performs more of a stand-in for the player. Although some parts of their personality may vary depending on the player, the protagonist is generally a kind character. While their main quest is to search for the Evoker, they don’t mind taking detours along the way if it’s to help someone. They mind even less if the person they’re helping may lead them towards finding the Evoker. The protagonist at the beginning of the story is relatively weak, but as they progress further, they learn more about how to use their magic, and also gain more experience in combat. When the protagonist learns of their past life, their kindness begins to fade. They start off becoming colder and more distant, as to not hurt others. In the later stages, they start to find joy in the act of inflicting pain.

While writing a theme for this character, I wanted it to have a medieval vibe, so I gave it instruments like a dulcimer, a harp, and a kettledrum. The piece is written in D Dorian, which I have been led to believe gives off constantly-moving feeling, something that fits well with the protagonist's journey. I also made it gradually get more complex as it plays, showing how this story is about the protagonist's evolution.
The Evoker's protagonist's theme: "A Traveling Hero"
Lio: Born in 2028, in the city of Chicago, Illinois. Lio had a very lonely, his only "friends" being the dead animals he'd find on the road. His mental health was completely neglected, greatly contributing to his deterioration into insanity. Shortly after high school graduation, he went on to build one of the largest kill counts in American history with 47 confirmed murders, but was suspected to have killed over a hundred. After getting caught, he was faced with capital punishment. His soul was then reincarnated into another world, with all his memories lost.

When writing Lio's theme, I immediately knew I wanted it to sort of be the "evil version" of the protagonist's theme. After all, they are technically one and the same. The protagonist's leitmotif plays throughout the piece, initially being very similar to the original, but is then replaced by a slightly different melody, showing the effects of Lio's corruption. The first half of Lio's theme is also played in D Dorian, until after the bridge where it switches to a D melodic minor scale. The only difference between the two is that the seventh note is raised by a semitone in the latter. The instruments used are also much more modern, as Lio comes from a whole different world. Lio's theme shows off how chaotic he is, but also has smart and menacing moments, signified when the piece slows down.
Lio's theme: "My Inner Evil"
